Helen Grace wins 3rd Gold
05th July 2010

Helen Grace won a third Gold Award this month for another photograph from the Tenth Winter Paralympics. Helen Grace covered the Winter Paralympics in Vancouver earlier this year, and this photograph of Andrea Dziewor of Canada taking a horrific tumble during the Womens Downhill- Standing at Whistler Creekside was awarded a Gold by The Societies.
Conditions were fairly icy even in full sunshine and Andrea caught an edge and flew rather spectacularly through the air losing her skies and goggles as she did so. Helen Grace was positioned to capture images at every stage of her fall, this one being one of the least disturbing, as the competition was halted for over half an hour whilst Andrea received medical attention and was taken from the course on a stretcher.
Twenty-four year old Andrea, who began competing as a paralympian following the amputation of her left leg above the knee, also enjoys swimming, surfing and road cycling. She is a sea kayak guide and gives talks to schoolchildren to encourage them to participate in sport.
This image will join Helen Grace's previous Gold in The Societies International Sports Photographer of the Year category at the Annual Awards, announced January 2011.
